Today I've been thinking about it-and reading Sarah Palin's book. And while we took down the outside Christmas lights, not much else got done while I read and pondered--much to my husband’s chagrin (of course it was AFTER the football game, while he was working and I was sitting, that he got irritated).
So, here is my plan-it may evolve over the year, but it won't change drastically:
I will read 40 books--ouch, did I just say that??!! I realize you were likely hoping for some number that doubled or even tripled my previous score and that 40 is only 7 more than I read last year, but come on, I’m only human and, along with blogging about the downfall of our beloved Republic 40 books will be a stretch! That number will also not reflect my daily Scripture reading--unless of course I fail miserably and need the Book of Mormon to be added to make forty! At that point,I may begin to include magazines and children’s books—which I know some who have, and you know who you are <3 Here is what’s on my short list:
- Going Rogue by Sarah Palin
- The Real George Washington by Jay Parry
- Jesus the Christ by James E. Talmadge
- The Mapmaker’s Wife by Robert Whitaker
- The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom
- Night by Elie Wiesel
- God in the Dock by C.S. Lewis
- The Great Apostasy by James E. Talmadge
- The Poetry of Robert Frost by Robert Frost
- Christopher Columbus, the Last Templar by Ruggero Marino
- My Dearest Friend: the Letters of Abigail and John Adams edited by Margarete A. Hogan and C. James Taylor
- The Great Prologue by Mark E. Petersen
- Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
Now this list is in no way comprehensive, and is in no particular order. (It also includes two books I'm in the middle of--the Sarah Palin book, and the George Washington book--did I already mention I love George Washington?) In fact, “Atlas Shrugged” will likely be next or very close to next, because, as you will have read in the above linked post, I had started it once, and it DOES still have a bookmark in it; also, someone is anxious for me to finish it.
There you have it; it’s been publicly stated, and I’ll have to get off now and get busy, I have a LOT to read!

Ohh you have some good books there! I know most of them except for your last one..I'll have to look that one up. My oldest and I have a goal to finish the BoM in 100 days..should be a cakewalk compared to your goal!!
I'm jealous of your ambition! I'll be thankful to get half that many read!
Woo! Rock on!
Bonita, after President Hinckley died, we did an Internet challenge to read the Book of Mormon in 96 days, the outline should be still online, it might help you stay on track :) It was just called "the Hinckley challenge" I think. Good luck!
Thanks Jeanetta! I will go check it out!!
I'm copying it off. Maybe we could read them together. I started Sarah's book but side tracked. I like to read 4 or 5 books at a time.
The Hiding Place is my all time fav. It saved my life. really. I was in such a dark hole of depression, for all my life actually.
Her story made it finally click. About the Atonement and forgiveness, not to mention how easy my life is compared to hers.
It is required of my children to read it before the leave the household when they grow up. There is also a simplified version for children that my boys still remember.
Hey have you read the story of Eric Liddle in your homeschool? He was the Chariots of Fire Olympian. Wonderful. He refused to compete on the Sabbath and it cost him a gold medal.
I am totally a book junkie.
Sigh...yeeees, I know who I are :(
No frowns, it's all good :D
Mach Momma,I'll have the entire list of what's on my nightstand updated this weekend--oh gosh, it's only Monday, well, hopefully BEFORE the weekend. I have a couple of LDS books on the Constitution that will be moving up to the short list too-see, I told you it was likely to evolve some:D
PS Mach Momma, I'd LOVE a reading partner-are you on Facebook?
yes I am! can't find your email. will your email me?
Looks like a good list. I read Atlas Shrugged in high school. In fact I read most of Ayn Rand's books in high school and have been thinking of re-reading some of them.
I have Palin's book out from the library right now but I am not sure if I am going to actually read it.
40 is a good number. Slightly more sane than the number of books I've been reading. :-)
Atlas Shrugged makes my top 10 list--which is actually a list that fluctuates--but I've read it once and also twice to my hubby. We skip through some parts though...
Hiding Place is terrific, and I would love to check out the others on your list. I was a bit dissappointed in the Sarah Palin interview on Beck because she still believes there are only two parties.
Check out Richard Maybury--his Uncle Eric books are especially good for youth homeschoolers as well as adults.
Awesome. Thank you!!
