I received this in an email recently; my edit is in red:
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer.
You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class(or racial)hatred.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
Rev. William Boetcker, 1873 - 1962
These are truisms. A truism is a self-evident truth; something our children would say "duh" to.
It seems to me that all these "cannot's" are being done already by our government. To us.
Read each of them carefully, and you will find it's companion in the daily headlines.
Bailouts
"Spreading the wealth"
Taxing business
Taxing us
Welfare
Multiculturalism
Handouts
I would suggest everyone read "A Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley and "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. It will give you a good picture of what will happen by not heeding the truisms above.

I love how you like to challenge my "thinker". I keep telling my mom about your "commentaries"...the two of you would definitely have some interesting conversations :)
The issue, I believe, is fighting the idea of relativism. Having read your post on conservatism before this got me into the mindset of "fighting the good fight" and our "wrestle against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." From my observations I think the task is teaching/convincing people that there are in fact absolutes in this world. In my counselor training we were taught emphatically against dichotomous thinking, that there is no such thing as black and white - just MANY MANY shades of gray. I've got to believe that the over-prevalence of this thinking is due to dear old Slick Willy.
